Commission on Interracial Cooperation affiliated organizations files, 1918-1942.

The series consists of records of some of the organizations and committees that were affiliated with, but operated independently from, the Commission on Interracial Cooperation from 1918-1942. Primarily contains records relating to the Conference on Education and Race Relations including correspondence, reports, minutes, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings. Of particular interest are records relating to the Conference's "America's Tenth Man" project conducted in high schools and the Conference's work on the problem of the incorporation of race studies into the South's educational institutions. Other organizations documented in the collection include the Southern Commission on the Study of Lynching who's records include correspondence relating to medals awarded to southern sheriffs who took steps to avoid mob violence; the short-lived Commission on the Study of the Participation of the Negro in Southern Life; the Special Committee on Negroes and Economic Reconstruction which relate to Roosevelt's New Deal programs; and the CIC's Committee on Women's Work which relate to its activities other than the crusade against lynching.

The Commission on Interracial Cooperation was founded in 1918 by a group of prominent blacks and whites who wished to address the social, political, and economic problems facing African Americans. Incorporated in 1929 in Georgia, the Commission consisted of state and local committees throughout the South. Will W. Alexander, a white Methodist minister served as director for twenty-five years.
